Food Blog

So now that I have an iPhone ($.99... the cheapest most complicated piece of technology I've ever purchased) I am able to take pictures of my food like the rest of the world.

Vegan apple pie: our hand-picked apples + a pie crust made with Earth Balance Buttery Sticks. Sweetened with honey and maple syrup instead of white sugar. Hand-ground cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.

Red beet eggs: a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty that I brought to a "cultural" potluck/wedding party with some of my work colleagues. First time I've made them, and successfully! Fresh boiled beets, a little sugar, white vinegar, salt, hard boiled eggs. My grandma's recipe called for canned beets but I think using fresh ones was really essential.

Sauerkraut: red and white cabbage in a canning jar. This is my third attempt at homemade sauerkraut, and it finally worked -- the problem was getting the fermentation right, which means making sure no other airborne bacteria/fungi/yeast will find their way into your cabbage, which is essentially open-air for about a week. This was once crunchy raw cabbage, and now it's soft, tangy, and a little salty. Wild fermentation!

How am I managing to cook so much when I have so little time??

Harvest

Don and I went apple picking with Viv and Nicole last weekend... I told my French teacher about it and she said it was a "very American and city-person thing to do."

Glorious Macintosh tree

I've so far made a batch of apple butter and some air-dried peels (for snacking during hikes...). Vegan apple pie is next!

Sax Russell the Hedgehog

We got a hedgehog! His name is Sax Russell.

He's from a breeder on Long Island. Don and I rented a Zipcar and drove out to the breeder's place of work in Maspeth to pick him up. We were inspired by watching YouTube videos of people giving their hedgehogs baths...

Everyday, the Wizard tries a new way to figure out how to eat him, to no avail. See below for Sax's defense technique.

He's a bit of a grouch, but I think he's getting a little better. We take him out at night and he runs around and tries to find spots to burrow under. He runs like a maniac on his wheel when we're sleeping. It's like having a little alien in the house!

Beach House / Caravan

Pictures from the Beach House show in Central Park were generally atrocious - I think the camera got hot or wet or something. Here is the only salvageable (if bland) picture.

Pictures at Caravan were slightly more successful. Caravan, a small, outdoors music festival that takes place in Maine and features mostly bands from Philly, has been happening for a few years now -- this time I road-tripped it with Don and Julio. Not much has changed since 2009, except perhaps the music, which has greatly improved. Honest Americana.

Rejuvenation

Adrenaline can fix a lot. And by "fix" I mean shift your psychological hyperspeed gears and make them run at a normal rate, rebalance your skewed perspective, and melt everything just a little bit, bringing life back to the solid ground. Adrenaline has no room for invitations or formal wear or calendars or email. Hydration and sunburns are allowed.

Cycling is different from running or other city-friendly sports because you need to think about survival. And when you're thinking about survival -- not getting slammed into, not getting doored, not riding over that perilously wide-slatted sewer grate -- your brain clamps down into alive mode. People who don't know what this is like -- and this is some pretty mild survival mode stuff, talk about vertical wall climbing and mountaineering -- are missing a very important part of the human experience, something so important that I would go so far as to say they are literally disabling themselves. People who have not had their very existence challenged in some way -- even if it's something as small as having to swim away from a very big wave at Jones Beach -- are really missing out. (RE: people in spin class.) They get stuck in psychotic loops of modern thinking: your daily world becomes smaller and smaller, the not-so-important details of your little urban life become quite important, you start sinking into an oppressive quagmire of anxiety and getting enough sleep. I am course talking about myself, and then I went on a bike ride.

No party is ever worth losing the ability to do this.

Excerpts from Bloom

I went to a Beach House concert last Monday in Central Park - pictures forthcoming.

They were incredible live - it's amazing how much sound can come out of three people. Victoria Legrand's voice was beautiful. It started pouring rain and we could see bolts of purple lightning streaking the sky behind the stage as they played.

Here are snips from the digital booklet that came with their new album, "Bloom."

Lyrics for "Myth"... highly advise a listen.

Keywords about this band that I kind of hate: heroin chic, dream pop, synth. But they really are great musicmakers and in the end it doesn't matter what all those kids are saying these days because let's face it, I'm getting a little old for that stuff.
